Abu Dhabi: The first mobile mammography screening unit in the UAE, enabling assessment and access to treatment within hours, has been launched by Tawam Hospital.
The new mobile service aims to screen up to 20 patients for breast cancer per day, a significant increase when compared to the number who visit hospitals for screening. Initially the pilot project will operate in Abu Dhabi, with plans to expand the programme to include six or more units.
The female-operated mobile service is self-contained, benefitting from high-end, cutting edge digital technology. Images can be transmitted to the hospital for instant diagnosis. If lesions are suspected, further analysis can be carried out and a decision on whether treatment is required can be made within hours. Should treatment be necessary, a dedicated breast cancer support team is on hand.
"While breast screening can be provided in hospitals, it is important to reach out to the remainder of the female population. Developing a mobile screening programme to provide mammograms and breast health education to rural women is the ideal solution, reflecting the needs of the local population," said Michael E. Heindel CEO of Tawam Hospital.
Will this help increase awareness of such screening programmes? Do you know any hospitals that provide such services?
