Dubai: A 100-bed hospital spread over 90,000 square feet exclusively for women and children was formally inaugurated in Dubai on Thursday by Princess Haya Bint Al Hussain, wife of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The MedCare hospital, which is located between second and third interchange on Shaikh Zayed Road, opened its doors in July. It recorded its first child birth on July 3 with a pair of twins born to a Filipina expatriate and since then it has steadily marked about 170 child births per month with 200 births recorded in September, informed the staff.

The hospital has a range of specialities and sub-specialities for women and children and is run by a 500-strong staff including about 42 female doctors and the rest nurses. Men, mainly for technical support, form only 13 per cent of the staff strength.

Alisha Moopen, executive director and CEO of Aster DM Health Care Group, said: “Usually women always put themselves last and we want them to care about their health and have provided a comfort zone where they will want to come for medical and diagnostic purposes. Our hospital covers a vast range of specialities such as obstetrics, gynaecology, dentistry, dermatology, plastic surgery including breast reconstruction surgery, urology, gastroenterology, paediatric cardiology and neonatology to name a few.”

Dr Sangeetha Viswanathan, paediatric intervention cardiologist at the hospital, said they were seeing at least 4-5 babies per month with cardiology issues. “Normally, one in 100 children suffers from congenital heart problems such as hole in the heart and sometimes these issues resolve by themselves. However, in some cases, surgical intervention is required and we conduct minimal invasive surgeries to close the holes.”

Dr Viswanathan added that the catheter laboratory for intervention cardiology for women and children had already been commissioned.

The hospital which accepts all health insurance cards has 32 single rooms priced at Dh1,300 per night, deluxe rooms priced at Dh6,500 per night and super luxury royal suites priced at Dh8,500 per night.
