Dubai: Office workers, typically those working in front of computers for long hours, suffer from dryness in the eyes and eye strain, said a senior optometrist during a five-day eye camp that concluded on Thursday.

The camp was organised by Rivoli Eye Zone for employees of Gulf News on the company’s premises.

More than 150 employees availed of eye screening and consultation.

Dr Mazher Khan, senior optometrist, Rivoli Eye Zone, said that among the cases screened common complaints were dryness in the eyes and eye strain.

“These are typical symptoms,” he said.

Dr Khan explained that the office environment with air-conditioning predisposes workers to dryness in the eye which is exacerbated when the person stares at a computer screen without blinking.

“The decreased blink rate and looking at the screen for an extended length of time without a break can lead to dry eyes or poor tear quality. Tears help lubricate the eyes. When you blink, a continuous film of tears is spread across the surface of the eyes,” he said.

Another complaint he said was the glare from the computer screen leading to eye strain. “My advice is to wear glasses with an anti-reflection (AR) coating, which reduces strain in the eyes by minimising reflection,” he said.
