Dubai: The Sunrise Group of Hospitals that includes the International Modern Hospital in Dubai and a centre in India completed 100 endoscopic thyroidectomies in 2014.

Most surgeons use the traditional method of open thyroidectomy that involves a large transverse cut across the neck. However, the Sunrise Group team headed by Dr Padmakumar conducted the surgery via small cuts in the armpit without any cut in the neck.

The thyroid gland is small butterfly shaped ductless gland in our throat and secretes thryroid hormones which regulate the metabolism of our body. However, malfunctioning of this organ leads to conditions such as goitre, cancers, non cancerous tumours, hyper and hypothyroidism.
