Abu Dhabi: Food Inspectors have destroyed 423 kilogrammes of meat found unfit for human consumption during surprise inspections.

The meat products were found unfit for human consumption by the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (FCA) officers during a series of spot checks on butcher shops and fishmongers in the meat market in Madinat Zayed

FCA inspectors made an unannounced visit to the meat, chicken and fish shops where they testing food safety, hygiene, cleanliness, the quality of meat products and the temperature in which they were stored. Inspectors visited 24 meat and butcher shops and issued four warnings, two fines while owners of nine shops were issued verbal guidance.

The Food inspectors were accompanied by a number of media representatives, Mohammad Jalal Al Raisi, Director of Communication and Community Service at the authority, said.

In a bustling meat market in the Madinat Zayed area of Abu Dhabi, teams of inspectors carried out simultaneous checks on 24 butchers, to ensure accuracy, he said.

The meat market was checked for correct temperatures and hygiene levels., and inspectors issued verbal guidance about minor violations, he added.

“It is very important for us that we show we are keeping our eyes in the field,” Al Raisi said, adding that no establishment would go unchecked. “When we carry out inspections, we hope we do not find any problems but we will act if we do.”

He also urged members of the public to report offences.
