UAE: International defence conference discusses global disruptions

Abu Dhabi: The International Defence Conference (IDC) 2025, coinciding with the International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) and Naval Defence & Maritime Security Exhibition (NAVDEX) 2025, commenced today at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi.

The conference features three key sessions covering global disruptions and defense preparedness, efforts to mitigate threats to critical supply chains, and the role of misinformation and influence operations in modern conflicts. Additionally, there will be a session on space, addressing emerging threats and opportunities. The conference hosts 12 distinguished speakers, including senior defense officials, ministers, and industry leaders from around the world.

Over the past three decades, the exhibitions have solidified the UAE’s status as a leading global hub for defense and security industries, contributing to regional stability and global security. Since its inaugural edition in 1993, IDEX has experienced remarkable growth in scale and international participation, becoming a key platform for showcasing cutting-edge technological innovations and fostering strategic partnerships.

Since their inception, both exhibitions have witnessed continuous expansion. The number of exhibitors grew from 350 companies in 1993 to 1,350 in 2023, reflecting a 385 per cent increase. The number of participating countries rose from 24 in 1993 to 65 in 2023, marking a 270 per centincrease. Additionally, visitor numbers surged from 20,000 in 1993 to 132,000 in 2023, a 660 per cent rise.

The 2025 edition is set to witness an increase in exhibitors, reaching 1,565 companies from 65 countries—representing a 16 per cent growth compared to the previous edition. The total exhibition space has expanded by 10 per cent to 181,501 square metres. The event also welcomes 731 new companies, marking an 82 per cent increase from the last edition. A total of 41 national pavilions will be featured, while UAE-based companies make up 16% of exhibitors, with international companies comprising 84%.

The event will showcase 41 national pavilions, emphasising its global nature and enhancing opportunities for collaboration and strategic partnerships.
