New York: The UAE has established diplomatic ties with Liberia.

A joint statement signed here on Wednesday formally establishes diplomatic relations at the highest level from May 6, 2009.

UAE Permanent Ambassador to the United Nations, Ahmad Abdul Rahman Al Jarman, signed the statement while his Liberian counterpart, Charles Menor signed for his country in a short ceremony held at the UN headquarters and witnessed by members of the diplomatic missions of the two sides.

The joint statement, which was deposited at the UN headquarters in Arabic and English, expresses the desire of the two countries to achieve mutual interest of their peoples and to promote friendship and cooperation between them in the political, economic, social and humanitarian areas, in accordance with the UN Charter international law, particularly in the areas of respect for and boosting of global peace and security, equality, national sovereignty, independence, regional peace and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries according to the Vienna convention of April 18, 1961, as well as the principle of non-alignment.

The statement also expresses the desire of the two countries to work together in mutual trust and friendly diplomatic ties to help achieve global peace and security and peaceful co-existence.

Soon after the signing ceremony, the two ambassadors held a meeting during which they discussed political, cultural, joint economic relations and ways to boost them, including exchange of visit and sharing of expertise and boosting of economic relations in various areas.
