The “General Treaty of Peace” is signed by Britain and rulers of Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Dubai, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Jazirat Al Hamra (now in Ras Al Khaimah) to combat piracy and maintain peace on the Gulf.

The first Maritime Truce is signed between Britain and rulers of Sharjah, Dubai, Ajman, and Abu Dhabi which banned all hostilities at sea during the pearling season between 21 May and 21 November.

Agreements are signed between Britain and Trucial states where British government gain control over foreign affairs and each emirate control their internal affairs.

Emirates of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain come together to form UAE federation with Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan as president after British independence. Ras Al Khaimah joined the federation a year later.

A British military delegation arrives in Abu Dhabi on a brief visit to the UAE headed by Major-General G. Hitler.
April 21, 1981
Margaret Thatcher arrives in Abu Dhabi for her first official visit to the UAE, becoming the first British Prime Minister in office to visit the country. In her visit, UAE and Britain are negotiating for the supply of military hardware and training facilities to this country.

British Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Douglas Hurd arrives in Abu Dhabi and meets Lt. General Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Shaikh Khalifa told Hurd that peace and security in the Middle East could not be achieved without total Israeli withdrawal from occupied Arab territories and recognition of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

Britain‘s Prince Charles and Princess Diana arrives in Abu Dhabi for four-day visit as part of Gulf tour. The royal couple meet President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and other UAE leaders and discussed with them ways of strengthening trade and economic ties between the two countries.
