Abu Dhabi: President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has honoured a judge from the Umm Al Quwain court after a compassionate act of justice captured national attention and exemplified Emirati values.

The story, first reported by Gulf News, dates back to 2019 when an Afghan father appeared in court burdened by a Dh60,000 fine for overstaying his family's residency visas. Facing financial and emotional hardship, he stood before the judge with his young son — a boy named Zayed, in tribute to the UAE’s founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Moved by the father’s gesture and the family’s respect for the UAE, the judge stepped down from the bench and personally handed the boy a scarf bearing the UAE flag and the name ‘Zayed.’ It was a quiet but powerful moment that spoke volumes about compassion and cultural solidarity.

“Zayed should not pay the fine; Zayed must be honoured,” the judge reportedly said before announcing a reduced fine. He then paid the remaining amount out of his own pocket, closing the case entirely. His act of kindness not only resolved a legal matter but also offered dignity and hope to a family in distress.

News of the judge’s generosity eventually reached Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, who was deeply touched by the gesture. In a public gathering at his majlis on Tuesday, the UAE President personally honoured the judge, praising him for embodying the nation’s core values — mercy, dignity, and humanity.

“Sheikh Mohamed’s recognition was a moment of immense pride,” said those in attendance. “It reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to justice with compassion.”

The story has since resonated widely across the Emirates, drawing praise for the judge’s empathy and the leadership’s response. Many have lauded the episode as a true reflection of the spirit of the UAE — one where law meets humanity.

Background

In 2019, the Emirati judge decided to pay the overstaying fines of an Afghani family after learning that their son had been named ‘Zayed’ in honour of the UAE’s founding father. The family had overstayed their visas for several years and faced fines totalling Dh60,000. Upon hearing their story, the judge was moved to act, stating: “This is to celebrate the 48th UAE National Day.”

The father expressed disbelief and gratitude, saying he never imagined his son’s name would bring such mercy and respect. All legal cases against the family were closed following the judge’s intervention.
