Fitness centre raises funds for Palestinians

Dubai: A children's fitness centre held a private fundraiser in Dubai on Saturday for the suffering youth of Gaza.

The event, held at My Gym on Jumeirah Beach Road, was supported by the Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF) and sought to support treatment expenses and collect supplies for young victims of the Israeli air raids in Gaza.

Nadia Wehbe, medical and media relations officer at PCRF, said: "I think we've seen a change in mentality recently in that the people of Dubai aren't just donating money to the Palestinian cause, they are spending a lot of time and effort to organise events and raise awareness.

"Through events like today's we get to meet a lot of new people and recruit volunteers for further charity fundraisers. People can raise money in so many different ways and small events inevitably lead to bigger things."

The event was by invitation only but two volunteers from the PCRF were at the door to accept donations from residents eager to contribute to the cause.

Yasmine Al Alami, managing partner of My Gym, said: "The My Gym Kids Care event is by kids for kids. The children get to enjoy the gym's facilities and take part in arts and crafts workshops all in the name of a good cause.

"As a mother myself and a humanitarian I felt it was important to contribute to the ongoing relief efforts for the people suffering in Gaza. The response has been fantastic; we were sold out within the first day."

Assistance: Red Crescent campaign

The UAE Red Crescent Society Gaza campaign is soliciting donations at the Mall of the Emirates, Wafi City and at Union Co-operative Society outlets in Al Safa, Al Aweer, Al Twar and Al Hamriya besides at UAE Red Crescent Society offices in Al Twar, Dubai.

Materials needed: Food that can be preserved for long periods like rice and milk powder, and new clothes.

Those keen to make donations can also call Red Crescent at 800733. Companies can also contact the UAE Red Crescent Society to set up collection stalls at their own premises.
