Awareness campaign targeting youth explains physical and environmental dangers
Abu Dhabi: With Eid festivities drawing near, Abu Dhabi Police have warned residents of the dangers of fireworks.
An awareness campaign was launched on Monday, as the last ten days of Ramadan usually witness an excessive use of fireworks, police said.
The campaign targets youngsters, especially adolescents. Major General Mohammad Al Awadi Al Menhali, acting Director-General of police operations at Abu Dhabi Police, said: "Fireworks can potentially cause physical damage as well as environment pollution. They can start fires and thus threaten the safety of the members of the community and their property."
He urged parents of youngsters to educate children about the seriousness of playing with fireworks. Parents must curb their children from buying and using them, particularly during festivals and events, he said.
‘Terror and chaos'
"Using fireworks in the open can also lead to terror and chaos in the streets and neighbourhoods."
Accidents caused by fireworks can cause injuries and disabilities, he warned.
Police also launched another campaign to popularise a toll free number whereby residents can report issues to the authorities confidentially.
The Aman service can be reached by calling 800-2626 or sending a text message to 2828. Residents can report public nuisances that require police intervention to Aman.
