Sharjah: A massive fire erupted at a residential building in Abu Shagara district at around 8.55 pm on Wednesday.
The fire started in a restaurant and gutted three apartments, according to Brigadier General Abdullah Saeed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of Sharjah Civil Defence, told Gulf News.
Dozens of families were evacuated from the six-storey building that caught fire. The fire was brought under control after civil defence received the first fire alert.
Firefighters from headquarters, Samnan and Muailah stations joined in putting out the flames for at least two hours.
At least four people suffered from suffocation and were treated on site.
Police cordoned off the area and diverted traffic to safer lanes. The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
The civil defense handed the site to the fire experts of Sharjah Police for further investigation.
