Abu Dhabi: Capital Garden, one of the oldest public parks in the capital, is now open after a makeover, Abu Dhabi City Municipality said in a statement on Monday.
The renovation spanned 8,110 square metres of the park’s area, and included the construction of two multi-purpose playgrounds fitted with swings, slides and monkey bars. A separate area for sports has a basketball court and football nets. In addition, landscaping works were undertaken to plant locally growing trees.
The garden, which is also known as Al Asema Park, covers 50,000-square metre garden and is located in one of the most densely populated areas of the city, and is bounded by Khalifa Bin Zayed Street, Hamdan Bin Mohammad Street, Fatima Bint Mubarak Street and Sultan Bin Zayed the First Street.
The park, first built in 1976, comprised of a number of fountains and areas for relaxation. There was also a mosque and a restaurant. In recent years, it had, however, become run down, and many of the swings and slides were rusted.
The garden is open from 8am to 10pm from Sunday to Wednesday, and from 8am to 11pm from Thursday to Saturday.
Capital Garden is the second of the parks in the city to be upgraded. In March this year, the Mushrif Central Park was redesigned by real estate developer, Al Ain Properties, and opened to visitors. As reported by Gulf News, its new features include a botanical garden, an animal barn, an amphitheatre, as well as brand new prayer areas, rest rooms and a cafe.
Seven other public parks have also been developed by the municipality this year at a cost of Dh34 million. The new facilities, which span a total area of 59,000 square metres, are located in the suburbs of Al Shamkha and Al Adleh, and cater to the growing communities in these localities.
