One victim reportedly jumped from the 42th floor in a bid to escape the fire
Sharjah: Four people have died and several others were injured after a fire broke out in a residential high-rise in Sharjah’s Al Nahda area on Sunday, authorities confirmed.
Among the victims was a person who reportedly jumped from the 44th floor in a desperate attempt to escape the blaze. At least six people sustained injuries or suffered from smoke inhalation and are currently being treated at the hospital, officials added.
By 7:20 pm, authorities began allowing residents to re-enter the building. However, access to floors above the 30th level will be permitted only after thorough safety checks. Floor 42, where the fire reportedly started, remains sealed off and inaccessible. A total of 148 residents were evacuated from the 50-storey tower.
The Social Services Department is awaiting instructions to provide accommodation for affected residents.
Sharjah Civil Defense said it received an emergency call at 11:31 am and responded immediately. Firefighting units from nearby stations were dispatched, and emergency protocols were activated upon arrival at the scene.
The fire, which broke out on the upper floors of the tower, triggered a rapid evacuation of residents. Fire crews worked simultaneously to contain the blaze and prevent further damage. Police patrols were deployed to secure the area and manage traffic, ensuring unhindered access for emergency services.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and assess the building’s adherence to safety regulations.
