RAK Police advise residents to secure homes before traveling
Ras Al Khaimah: In a bid to keep the community safe and give residents peace of mind, Ras Al Khaimah Police have launched a public awareness campaign to prevent home thefts during the travel and holiday season. The campaign, titled "How to Protect Your Home from Theft?", is being run by the Media and Public Relations Department in cooperation with the Criminal Investigations Department.
As part of the campaign, Ras Al Khaimah Police are urging residents to take simple but important steps to protect their homes while they are away. These include installing smart security cameras and modern alarm systems that can be monitored remotely, using strong and high-quality smart locks, and keeping valuable items in safe places like bank deposit boxes.
The police also advised travelers to ask trusted family members or neighbors to regularly check on their homes while they are away. Additionally, they stressed the importance of turning off gas lines and unplugging unnecessary electrical devices to avoid potential fire hazards.
Ras Al Khaimah Police emphasised that home burglaries tend to increase during the summer when many families travel. This creates opportunities for thieves to break in and steal valuable belongings. To prevent this, the police are calling on everyone—both citizens and residents—to use proper security measures to keep their homes safe.
Install smart security cameras - Use cameras that you can monitor remotely through your phone to keep an eye on your home at all times.
Use reliable alarm systems - Invest in trusted security systems that can alert you and the authorities in case of any break-in attempts.
Secure all doors and windows - Make sure all entry points are locked with high-quality, tamper-resistant locks.
Store valuables safely - Keep your precious items, important documents, and cash in secure places like bank safe deposit boxes.
Ask family or neighbors for help - Request someone you trust to check your home regularly while you’re away.
Create the illusion that someone is home - Use timers to switch lights on and off or keep a car parked outside to make your home look occupied.
Turn off gas and unplug unnecessary devices - This helps prevent possible fire accidents while you’re traveling.
Inform the police about long trips - Some police stations offer home monitoring services during extended absences—check if this is available in your area.
Avoid sharing travel plans publicly - Don't post your travel dates or updates on social media until you return to reduce the risk of attracting burglars.
Report suspicious activity - If you or your neighbors notice anything unusual, contact the police immediately.
