Abu Dhabi: It’s International Women’s Day today (March 8), an occasion that is observed globally to celebrate the power, strength, and indomitable spirit of women.

While the idea of a Royal family member taking on a such a role at a theme park might seem unusual, it was Sheikha Aisha’s passion for marine life and education that prompted her to take on the responsibility.

“I was exploring job opportunities across Abu Dhabi when I came across SeaWorld Abu Dhabi. As I learned more about the marine life theme park, I was drawn to the opportunities within the Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue Centre, particularly the education department,” she said.

Sheikha Aisha is a 2023 graduate from the United Arab Emirates University with a major in cellular and molecular biology and a minor in cognitive science. Her academic research works included projects on marine biology and cytology.

“Given my background, I found this to be the perfect fit, allowing me to combine my passion for marine life with my education. Being in this role enables me to grow further while sharing my knowledge with guests in an engaging way.”

Hands-on approach

Sheikha Aisha manages the production and delivery of innovative educational experiences, providing consultation and overseeing staff training. She conducts classes for diverse age groups, from schools to universities and even homeschooling programmes, at the Yas SeaWorld Research and Rescue Centre.

Sheikha Aisha pointed out that having a scientific background is crucial when working in a marine life theme park that houses over hundreds of different species.

“It helps ensure that the information we share is accurate, educational, and presented in a way that is easy for guests to understand. Cognitive science also plays an important role, as it allows us to adapt our educational approach to different audiences, ensuring that both children and adults can connect with the information in a meaningful way.”

Sheikha Aisha is a key player in planning and executing the park’s seasonal events, such as Animal Celebration Days and hosting SeaWorld Camp.

“The education team plays a key role in ensuring that seasonal events align with SeaWorld Abu Dhabi’s mission of education and conservation,” she said, noting that her role involves creating interactive programmes that resonate with guests. “A big part of our work is engaging with guests to understand what they are most curious about, so we can tailor our programmes accordingly.”

Rewarding moments

She also oversees VIP tours for high-profile guests, which she underlined as a unique experience.

“While I cannot share specific names, one of the most memorable moments was seeing one VIP guest who came from the tropics, witness the Walruses for the first time in a state of complete fascination. Guests also develop a newfound appreciation for marine life after learning about the rescue and rehabilitation efforts at SeaWorld Abu Dhabi.”

For Sheikha Aisha, the most rewarding moments come from seeing guests, particularly children, leave with a new understanding and appreciation of marine life.

“Many guests arrive with limited knowledge about ocean conservation, but by the end of their visit, they leave inspired to contribute to protecting our oceans. Being part of an organisation that emphasises both education and conservation makes every day at SeaWorld Abu Dhabi rewarding.”

Bridging language gaps

Sheikha Aisha also serves as a digital translator, ensuring that bilingual materials are accurately conveyed to both Arabic and English-speaking audiences. This responsibility is one she takes seriously, as it bridges language gaps and ensures that all guests receive equal access to educational resources.

“I focus on using precise terminology to ensure that the message remains consistent across both languages.”

Her passion for learning extends beyond the marine world. Sheikha Aisha’s love for languages, particularly Chinese, is a personal story of curiosity.

“My fascination with the Chinese language started out of pure curiosity during my time at university. Over time, it evolved into a passion, and I have found it to be incredibly useful when engaging with Chinese guests at SeaWorld Abu Dhabi.”

Looking ahead, Sheikha Aisha is excited about future initiatives and projects.

“I see myself continuing to grow within the education team, finding new and innovative ways to engage guests and expand their understanding of marine life conservation.”
