UAE University initiative aims to give students equal opportunities
Al Ain: UAE University (UAEU) has established a new unit to assist students with disabilities enabling them to have access to educational opportunities equal to their fellow students.
The Assessment and Remedial Unit (ARU) has been formed at the Department of Special Education where the students will be encouraged to set up a consultation appointment with faculty members.
The services to be provided by the unit include counselling, assessment and remedial services, and training. The unit also plans to host a number of workshops, training and conferences to raise awareness about special education.
Yasser S. Natour, Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Unit, said: “This unit will increase the social and educational opportunities and quality of life for special needs children and their families by improving the community systems that help to support them.”
The unit will also conducts hands-on workshops on instrumentation, rehabilitation of students with a variety of language, speech, swallowing, voice disorders, and stuttering, in addition to aural rehabilitation for those with hearing loss, along with providing some training for physical therapy, occupational therapy and other allied services.
