The programme is said to be the first of its kind in the UAE and is co-sponsored by the Department of Health and Medical Services/ Dubai Health Authority (DOHMS/DHA). Currently 24 registered nurses from Al Wasl and Dubai Hospitals have enrolled in the programme.
The programme will equip students with the special skill sets and knowledge required to ensure the safety and wellbeing of an expecting mother and her baby, especially during childbirth. Students will receive both theoretical and practical experience in all areas of maternal, foetal and infant care. Upon completion of the programme, the midwives will be able to professionally assist mothers and families both in clinics, hospital settings and in the community.
Through this programme, DWC and DOHMS aim to enhance public awareness regarding the important role of midwives in the community. Both programmes are accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, in addition to being accredited by the Australian government. Officials say the programmes are fully recognised within the UAE, the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) and internationally for further education and employment in the private and public sectors. The Bachelor of Information in Management Information Systems programme is designed to meet the demand for graduates capable of developing, implementing and managing large-scale information systems so that they could determine the economic value and the strategic role of information technology.
The Bachelor of Computer Science in Digital Security Systems is designed to develop proficient information security professionals capable of protecting information assets from all types of threats. It provides students with practical knowledge and skills necessary to understand, analyse and design information security solutions to protect an organisation's information assets and equip students with expertise to mitigate security risks. "At UOWD, we have structured these programmes to incorporate new components to make them relevant to the regional market," said Rob Whelan, president of UOWD. "We anticipate an increased demand for these programmes as the UAE steps up its efforts towards becoming a knowledge hub and businesses increase their dependence on IT for diverse needs.

The British University in Dubai (BUiD) this month announced the launch of a new professional development unit (PDU) in response to the growing regional demand for specialised fast-track training. BUiD will work closely with corporate clients to create tailored educational and practical programmes that will provide a continued professional development route to enhance participants' roles in the workplace.
"The university is committed to encouraging professional development across regional public and private sectors," said Dr Abdullah Al Shamsi, vice-chancellor at BUiD. "We are pleased to welcome Mary Mayall to head this new unit of study that will offer expert instruction and industry specific tools across fields that complement BUiD's current academic disciplines." BUiD's current master's programmes are available in the fields of Education, Human Resource Management (HRM), Finance and Banking, Project Management (PM), Information Technology and Information Technology Management, Sustainable Design of the Built Environment and Systems Engineering.
Under the professional development unit, organisations and individuals have the option of taking independent master's units as a 'continued professional development' course in their specific area of interest.
