As the academic year ends, students and their parents begin exploring university options and selecting academic majors that align with the student’s aspirations and capabilities to shape their educational future.

The UAE Digital Government has published detailed information on its official website about higher education opportunities available to outstanding non-UAE students, including those from outside the GCC, who wish to pursue academic programs in the country.

According to the website, the United Arab Emirates offers educational opportunities for non-UAE and non-GCC students at both public and private schools, as well as at the university level. International students can enroll in public schools for a specific fee. Additionally, several UAE universities offer scholarships and programs for students from around the world.

Foreign residents and international students are eligible to apply to both public and private universities in the UAE, subject to specific requirements set by each institution. Recently, the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) announced it would admit foreign and resident students under conditions that include specific tuition fees and demonstrated academic excellence.

Official guide for foreign and resident students

The UAE government portal provides a comprehensive guide for foreign and resident students seeking to enroll in private universities. The key steps include:

  • Researching licensed universities accredited by the UAE’s Commission for Academic Accreditation.

  • Exploring academic programs approved by the same authority.

  • Understanding the specific admission requirements of each institution.

  • Familiarising yourself with general visa and residency requirements as stipulated by the institution and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA).

  • Consulting your home country’s embassy in the UAE for guidance on application procedures and available scholarships or benefits.

International students are advised to check with UAE embassies abroad or directly contact their desired institution for detailed admission and visa requirements.

Students sponsored by foreign governments should coordinate directly with their sponsoring agencies to make the necessary arrangements.

Student Visa

Students can live and study in the UAE under a visa sponsored either by an accredited university or a UAE-resident parent.

University student affairs offices facilitate the visa application process and support students throughout.

The student visa is valid for one year and is renewable upon submission of official proof of continued enrollment at a recognized UAE higher education institution.

Foreign residents may sponsor their male children up to the age of 25. Male students over 25 can remain under family sponsorship if they submit written proof of enrollment in a higher education program lasting at least one year. Female students can be sponsored by their parents regardless of age.
