The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS) at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has announced the launch of a PhD in Technology, Language and Society (TLS). The programme will be administered by the Technology, Language and Society (TLS) Committee.

The TLS Committee seeks to encourage its students to understand and to inform, in both national and global contexts, the study of human technologies, with frequent focus on aesthetic and social productions and on language and society in general, in a creative manner.

Areas of investigation will range widely, according to individual discipline and student interest, from languages and the modes of communication to the making of windmills and of hydroelectric power plants, from algebra and machine computation to the establishment of contemporary economies, animal domestication, urban projects, and health systems in modern society.

Initially the programme will welcome students undertaking studies that will contribute to the understanding of the conditions necessary for effective public policy strategies relating to the improvement of health and education, and the environment, within the UAE.

Dr Abdullah Khanbashi, Vice-Chancellor of the United Arab Emirates University, says: "We are honoured to announce the launch of a doctoral programme in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the first of its kind in the country.

"This launch builds on the role of the university in leading scientific research in the UAE. It is also significant as we continue to elevate the quality of our research output for use in driving the growth of our nation. The programme aims at building up a national specialised framework in scientific research, and provides solutions to the issues facing the country on both human and social levels."
