Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Police has announced a campaign to promote reading among inmates at correctional and penal institutions, as part of its contribution to the UAE’s Year of Reading.

 

President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan declared 2015 the Year of Reading, to encourage and promote reading in UAE society, with the President citing it as the main foundation for success and innovation. Several programmes are expected to be carried out this year by government departments across the country, as well as private institutions.

 

As part of the Abu Dhabi Police’s campaign, used books in different languages and a variety of subjects will be collected, and then distributed among inmates with the goal of contributing to their academic development and knowledge.

 

Abdullah Shaheen, Media Advisor and Press Branch Manager at the Security Media Department, said the campaign aimed to highlight the importance of reading, and to spread knowledge.

 

Shaheen added that there would be collection points for used books at the entrances of several departments, allowing both the public and members of the police force to contribute.

 

Maj. Shaima Talib Hussain, Head of the e-club section of strategic management and development of performance at Abu Dhabi Police, said the campaign would be active throughout the year, with a special committee being formed to follow up on the collection of books and their distribution.

 

Maj. Hussain also said the initiative by the Abu Dhabi Police demonstrated its commitment to taking part in projects that would help the community, and that it would always be at the forefront of any efforts that bring a positive change in society.
