Dubai: Aishwarya Sriram of Indian High School Dubai on Sunday earned the second-highest score of 96 per cent in the Commerce stream of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 12 examinations.

Her distinction at IHS is not just academic — she joins a line of IHS graduates from the same family since the 1980s.

Her father, Sriram Gopalakrishnan, was the school topper in the same exam in 1987, earning 75 per cent. He was an IHS student from 1980 to 1987.

Aishwarya’s parents, uncles and aunts are IHS graduates; her younger sister, Pratibha, is an IHS student in Class 9.

“It’s really a special feeling to be the newest IHS graduate from my family,” Aishwarya, 17, said. She plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in economics in Singapore or India.

“The most important part in studying is to put in your best and not worry about the results — they will be good if you work hard.”

Sriram said the entire family was proud of her achievement. Recalling his days at IHS, Sriram said: “I remember how the whole class would go for a day out to Safa Park in Dubai for a picnic. Dubai has grown a lot since then, and so has IHS. Its success has run parallel with the success of the city.”

Sriram is finance director at pharma company Actavis.

Aishwarya’s mum, Parvathi, studied at IHS from 1981 to 1990. “I remember Teachers’ Day; we would dress up in a sari and be a teacher to a junior class. I would make my class lively and fun, filled with games and jokes,” Parvathi said.

When asked why the family has stayed loyal to IHS for so long, Parvathi said: “IHS always guarantees results; if you go through their track record, you will see that. The school has exceptional education quality, while its fees are economical compared to other schools. It’s a very big school, yet run very well. The teachers, especially in the girls’ section, I would say, are very supportive.”

She added: “Besides, we have a personal connection with the school, with so many of us having studied there.”

Sriram’s brother, Suresh, studied at IHS from 1980 to 1985. His sister, Annapoorani, was with IHS from 1981 to 1992.

Parvathi’s siblings too were part of the IHS family — with brother S. Venkatraman studying from 1981 to 1988 and sister S. Narayani from 1983 to 1995.
