New initiative launched titled “Down Syndrome Rehabilitation through Para Taekwondo.”

As part of its continuous efforts to empower people of determination and promote their integration into society, Dubai Police has launched a new community sports initiative titled “Down Syndrome Rehabilitation through Para Taekwondo.” The initiative aims to empower individuals with Down syndrome by enabling their participation in local, regional, and international sports competitions.
The initiative is a collaboration between the General Department of Training, the People of Determination Empowerment Council, the UAE Taekwondo Federation, and the Emirates Down Syndrome Association. It focuses on enhancing participants’ physical and mental capabilities, boosting self-confidence, and encouraging active engagement in sports and community events.
Through para taekwondo, the program serves as a holistic rehabilitation tool, helping individuals develop strong, independent personalities. It embodies the principles of equality and inclusion, aligning with the UAE’s broader vision of empowering people of determination and enhancing their quality of life as integral members of society.
Brigadier Ahmed Mardas, Director of the General Department of Training, emphasized Dubai Police’s commitment to developing human resources across all sectors. “This sports initiative reflects our dedication to creating a comprehensive environment for rehabilitation and sports development. It is part of our broader mission to integrate individuals with determination into society in partnership with public and private sectors,” he stated.
Support from the Emirates Down Syndrome Association
Dr. Manal Jaroor, Chairperson of the Emirates Down Syndrome Association, expressed her appreciation for the initiative. “Training individuals with Down syndrome in para taekwondo adds immense value to their sports experience. Our team has already achieved notable success at both local and international levels,” she said.
Major Abdullah Al Shamsi, Chairperson of the People of Determination Empowerment Council at Dubai Police, highlighted the alignment of this initiative with the Year of Community. “This is part of our strategic plan to empower individuals with determination both within Dubai Police and in the wider community. We view training and rehabilitation as fundamental rights and work to provide an inclusive, empowering environment,” he said.
He further noted that para taekwondo, with its emphasis on discipline and strength, is an effective medium to showcase the potential of individuals with Down syndrome. “We are committed to supporting these efforts to enable them to compete confidently at all levels,” he added.
Lieutenant Colonel Abdulaziz Al Shammari from the Sports Excellence Center, along with Mohammed Al Madani, board member of the UAE Taekwondo Federation and Head of the Competitions Committee, and Samira Thabet from the People of Determination Empowerment Council, reviewed the achievements of the Emirates Down Syndrome Association. They discussed the positive impact the initiative has had in enhancing both the sports and social skills of participating students.
Expert Abdul Quddus Mohammed, a certified trainer and Director of the Games for People of Determination team, presented an overview of the program. He outlined how it improves participants’ motor and neurological coordination, builds self-confidence, and fosters social inclusion. The initiative includes various training stages, with plans to introduce female participants with Down syndrome in the next academic year.
