Dubai karate team shines in India tournament

Five karatekas from Dubai attended a training seminar and tournament held in the Indian cities of Kochi and Chennai between February 16 and 25.

Five karatekas from Dubai attended a training seminar and tournament held in the Indian cities of Kochi and Chennai between February 16 and 25.

The International Shorin-Ryu Seibukan Karate-do Association of India conducted the training seminar in Kochi between February 16 and 18. In Chennai, they conducted a training seminar as well as the first Okinawan Karate Kobudo Tournament on February 24 and 25.

The Dubai team consisted of Sensei V.A.M. Iqbal (fourth dan), technical director of Shorin-Ryu Seibukan Karate-do for the Middle East region and chief instructor of Seibukan karate for the UAE; Sensei V.A.M. Jaleel (third dan), assistant chief instructor of Seibukan karate for the UAE; Sensei V.A. Najeem (third dan), chief examiner of Seibukan karate for the UAE; and two senior students - Arnab Ghosh and UAE national Hassan Arab Darwish.

Out of the five, three members - Iqbal, Arnab Ghosh and Hassan Arab - took part and won eight medals in the Chennai event, which had over 300 participants.

Hassan Arab took the bronze in the colour belt men's individual kata event for UAE, and followed with a silver in colour belt men's kumite (sparring). Iqbal added another silver in the black belt men's individual kata event.

The three-member team earned a bronze medal in the black belt men's team kata event. Iqbal added a gold in the men's kobudo event In this event, he performed kata "Tokunine no Kun." Finally, Arnab Ghosh finished the day with a gold medal in the black belt men's kumite event in the heavyweight category.
