By last year, some 65 per cent, or 560,077, of Dubai's population was categorised as employed, according to the Statistical Yearbook 2000 published by Dubai Municipality. In 1980, the employed were only 146,593.
In 2000, males constituted 89 per cent of all those who were employed. Ninety-seven per cent were categorised as employees while only 1.67 per cent figured as self-employed and 1.29 per cent as employers. Men dominated all three groups.
