Divergent maps disrupt border talks

Efforts by the Pakistan, Afghan and U.S. Tripartite Commission set up to examine skirmishes along the borders of the two countries, and determine if Taliban fighters were infiltrating Afghanistan from Pakistan, ran into early problems when Kabul and Islamabad failed to agree on which map of the area was to be used.

Both sides presented a sub-committee of the Commission, assigned the task of verifying the international border that divides Pakistan and Afghanistan, with maps that one source described as "markedly different."

The same source said the maps not only varied on the Durand Line dividing Pakistan and Afghanistan, but also what kind of geographic terrain lay along mountainous frontier.
