Dubai: A construction worker lost his appeal and will be jailed for three months for using a brick to strike a policeman who was removing cards advertising massage parlours posted on car windshields.
As part of a Dubai Police campaign to curb sticking cards advertising massage parlours on car windshields, several policemen were involved in a clean-up drive in the Russian Cluster at Dubai International City.
When a policeman removed several cards placed on a car windshield, the 26-year-old Nigerian worker attacked him on his head with a brick.
The policeman fell down injured, while other policemen restrained the Nigerian defendant and took him into custody.
In March, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the defendant of resisting police arrest ferociously and assaulting the policeman.
The Nigerian appealed his three-month imprisonment before the Appeal Court.
Presiding judge Saeed Salem Bin Sarm dismissed the appeal and upheld the defendant’s punishment.
The accused, who pleaded not guilty, will be deported following the completion of his jail term.
The injured policeman testified that they were directed by superiors to remove and collect cards stuck on windshields since it had become a growing menace.
“When I removed a number of cards, the defendant came towards me. While I continued removing the cards, he took me by surprise and pounded my head with a brick. My partner rushed to my rescue … they rushed me to hospital for treatment,” he said.
A police sergeant confirmed the victim’s statement.
The defendant admitted to prosecutors that he had attacked the policeman with a brick.
The appellate ruling remains subject to appeal before the Cassation Court within 28 days.
