Dubai: A worker and his girlfriend have been jailed after a court convicted them of threatening to kill another man if he did not stop stalking and harassing the girl.
The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced the 26-year-old Bangladeshi worker and his 24-year-old Filipina girlfriend to three months in jail each.
Presiding Judge Fahmi Mounir yesterday convicted the 26-year-old M.B. of threatening to kill his compatriot driver, M.A., and the latter's Emirati sponsor.
Prosecutors said M.B. impersonated police personnel and threatened to kill M.A.'s Emirati sponsor, if the latter did not deport M.A.
The Filipina was convicted of encouraging M.B. to pose as a policeman and persuading him to threaten the driver and his sponsor.
"No sir. I am not guilty I didn't threaten them. Actually I spoke to him over the phone but I did not threaten him," argued M.B. when he defended himself in court.
The Filipina, M.K., pleaded guilty of instigating M.B. to threaten the claimants, but denied encouraging him to impersonate police personnel when he phoned M.A.
The Emirati sponsor testified that his wife called him at work and informed him that M.B. had threatened to kill M.A. and his family if M.B. didn't stop stalking M.K.
The Emirati told prosecutors: "I reported [the incident to] the police as soon as the driver told me what happened."
"When the police summoned M.B., he claimed that he couldn't speak Arabic. So I phoned him to know what happened and he told me that he would kill me, M.A. and our families if I failed to deport him [M.A.]. He wanted me to deport M.A. because he had been harassing M.K."
