Dubai: A visitor will serve five years in prison for providing his girlfriend with hashish. The pair were discovered by police naked in a Deira hotel room following a tip-off.

The Dubai Court of First Instance found the 34-year-old Iranian visitor, S.H., guilty of possessing and consuming hashish and providing it to his 28-year-old countrywoman teacher, M.J. He was also fined Dh30,000.

Meanwhile M.J. was jailed for four years for possessing and taking hashish.

The duo will be deported following the completion of their jail terms.

“We obtained prosecutors’ permission to search the duo, who we found unclothed inside the hotel room. They had consumed drugs and alcohol,” an anti-narcotics police captain told the court.

The defendants were charged with consuming hashish and liquor.

S.H., who was on a visit visa at the time of his arrest, was solely accused of smuggling and possessing hashish and providing M.J. with the drug.

The teacher denied consuming hashish in court.

“I only consumed liquor... but not drugs,” M.J. said.

Her accomplice, S.H., confessed to all the charges.

Prosecution records said the 34-year-old visitor smuggled 15.07g hashish and 0.43g of amphetamine. He was accused of providing M.J. with hashish to consume and consuming hashish and amphetamine.

Drunk

When asked if he had provided M.J. with drugs, the visitor replied: “I did. I was smoking a hashish cigarette and she asked me for a smoke and I gave it her.”

M.J.’s lawyer told the court that his client was dragged into the case against her will. He said she was drunk at the time of the incident and was unaware that she had taken hashish.

Records said the two Iranians tested positive for drugs.

The anti-narcotics police captain testified an informant told them the couple was consuming hashish in their hotel room.

“A police patrol was dispatched to the hotel at 11.15am. We raided the room and searched their clothes but didn’t find any drugs… we didn’t search them because they were naked. We found some banned substances in the room. Upon confronting S.H. with the findings, he admitted that he smuggled them with him from Iran on the day previous to his arrest. M.J. admitted that S.H. provided her with a hashish cigarette to smoke,” the captain said.

The defendants have already appealed their sentences and are scheduled to appear before the Appeal Court soon.
