Dubai: A luxury hotel’s valet parking attendant, who stole an iPad from a guest’s vehicle when he took it to the underground parking, has been jailed for three months.

The 20-year-old Pakistani valet parking attendant, B.S., collected the Saudi guest’s sports utility vehicle to park it in the parking lot when he stole the iPad in March.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted B.S. of stealing after he pleaded guilty.

Presiding judge Mohammad Jamal ordered court policemen to take the defendant into immediate custody as B.S. was present in court.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said B.S. abused his job as a valet parking attendant and stole the iPad worth Dh700.

The accused had earlier sought a lenient punishment.

The Saudi guest testified that the incident happened when he dropped off his car at the valet parking and went up to his room at the hotel in Bur Dubai.

“I went up to my room and slept. Around noon I left my room and went to my car … I did not find my iPad when I checked my belongings. I informed the hotel and reported the matter to the police,” he claimed.

The accused was cited admitting to prosecutors that he stole the iPad from the guest’s car.

Tuesday’s ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
