Sharjah: Two men have been able to steal gold jewellery worth over Dh70,000 from a jewellery shop, police confirmed on Sunday.

Although the suspects were not arrested, police believe they are of Afghan origin, and the investigation is still continuing.

The theft took place at around 10.30pm on Saturday in Masoom Jewellery shop, which is located in Al Rolla area.

"We were done for the day and were going to close the shop soon. Then two men came in as customers and as we were showing them the gold, they wanted to choose the gold jewellery themselves.

"Then one of them picked the whole exhibit box with 63 gold ring pieces and ran outside," said Indian shopkeeper Abdul Qader Ali Purath, 32.

A shopkeeper nearby, who witnessed the incident, said that he saw two men running away very fast. "But they disappeared into the crowded street before the shopkeepers were able to catch them," said Mohammad Qaisser, 37.

A police official pointed out that they arrived 10 minutes after the incident took place, and that the investigation continues.
