Sharjah/Abu Dhabi: A teenager and a 24-year-old man were killed on Monday night after their vehicles collided and caught fire in Industrial Area 15 of Sharjah.

Sharjah Police identified the victims as a 17-year-old UAE national and Haitham N., 24, from Jordan.

Lieutenant Colonel Arif Al Shamsi, Head of the Traffic and Accident Section at Sharjah Police, said the two vehicles collided and caught fire, before turning over several times.

The accident was caused by speeding when Haitham overtook a heavy vehicle from the right and then faced an oncoming motorist.

The vehicles then collided and caught fire, killing the motorists instantly. The UAE national victim was underage and did not have a driver's licence.

The accident held the traffic up for three hours.

Anjad patrols and Civil Defence rushed to the scene of the accident and immediately put out the fire. Both bodies were transferred to Al Kuwaiti hospital.

Meanwhile, in Abu Dhabi, a Sudanese man was killed and his wife injured in a car crash last morning on Airport Road.

"[The collision] between the Toyota Corolla car [driven] by the Sudanese couple and a Land Cruiser resulted in the unfortunate incident," a rescue official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The 30-year-old wife was driving the car when the accident that killed her husband took place, the official said. At around 6:15am the rescue department was alerted by the central operations about the accident and a team of paramedics rushed to the scene.

The crash happened during the early hours of the day, close to the Zayed Sports City on Airport road. It is understood that the male driver of the four wheel drive escaped unharmed.
