Sharjah: In its ongoing efforts to enhance community security and combat illegal begging, Sharjah Police arrested 144 beggars — both men and women — during the month of Ramadan. The campaign also led to the confiscation of over Dh76,000 found in the offenders' possession.

The crackdown was part of the ‘Begging is a Crime, Giving is a Responsibility’ awareness campaign, launched by the General Command of Sharjah Police to educate the public and prevent the exploitation of charitable donations through illegal means.

Brigadier General Omar Al Ghazal, Director of the Special Tasks Department at Sharjah Police, praised the dedication of police teams in tackling the issue. He emphasized that begging not only exploits public generosity but also poses potential security risks.

He urged residents to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities. Community members were encouraged to call 901 or 80040 to report and pinpoint the locations of beggars, contributing significantly to the campaign's success.

Public cooperation key to success

Sharjah Police continue to stress the importance of public cooperation in maintaining security and public order. Officials warned that many beggars operate within organised networks, exploiting religious and charitable sentiments, particularly during Ramadan.

The campaign reinforced the message that charitable donations should be made through official, licenced organisations to ensure aid reaches those truly in need while preventing fraud.

Sharjah Police reaffirmed their commitment to tackling begging and other security concerns, promising continued efforts to maintain a safe and secure environment for all residents.
