Dubai: A policeman admitted driving two unmarked police cars without permission and unlawfully charging the police for fuel expenses, when he appeared in court on Tuesday.

"I am not guilty your honour. My only mistake was that I used the two police cars and filled them with petrol using the special prepaid cards without informing my superiors," the 28-year-old Bangladeshi told Presiding Judge Al Saeed Mohammad Barghout.

Prosecutors charged the suspect, A.A., with abusing his duty in the force when he drove the cars, worth Dh88,500, without permission over a period of one year. He was also charged with conning police money by illegitimately using special prepaid petrol cards to fill the vehicles with fuel.

A.A. admitted that he used the cars without permission when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Tuesday.

The suspect was accused of embezzling public money. He was accused of raking up Dh2,600 in fines.

The court will hear prosecution witnesses on November 15.
