Sharjah: The Criminal Investigation Department of Sharjah Police said it has arrested and charged two Arab men for impersonating the police to rob a number of people of different nationalities, an official at Sharjah Police said on Monday.
The Al Gharb police station received nine complaints from various areas stating that the men, claiming to be officers of the law, had assaulted and divested them of belongings such as wallets and mobile phones.
The police formed an investigation team, tracked the whereabouts of the two men and set a trap.
The suspects were arrested and they confessed to the charges. The case has been transferred to the Public Prosecution Department.
Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Hassan Al Shamsi, Head of Criminal and Investigation section at Al Gharb police station, said, “We found that the suspects were targeting people who did not have adequate knowledge about police procedures or did not think of asking the men to show them their police identity card.”
Lieutenant Colonel Al Shamsi called on residents to be wary of fraudsters and to always ask for police identification as well as check for authorisation for inspecting people when someone claimed to be from the police.
He called on people to report such individuals to the police.
