Dubai: A salesperson who forced his way into a flat and threatened to harm a woman with a stick before he had forcible sex with her has been jailed for one year.

The Egyptian woman was alone in her flat when the 28-year-old Sierra Leonean salesperson knocked on her door around 8pm and asked her about the contact number of her flatmate in December 2014.

The woman scolded the 28-year-old and asked him to leave before he returned at 1am and broke into the apartment.

He grabbed a stick from the kitchenette, threatened the woman to beat her and had forcible sex with her.

Then he stole her money and fled the scene, said records.

On Tuesday, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the accused of having sex with the woman and stealing her Dh170.

Presiding judge Mohammad Jamal said the defendant, who pleaded not guilty, will be deported.

The Egyptian woman said she kicked the defendant away from her door when he first came at 8pm.

“When he returned at 1am, he broke the door and stormed into the flat … he grabbed the stick and threatened me. Then he muzzled me, pinned me down to the floor and raped me. When he finished, he took my money and fled the scene,” she said.

The victim’s Egyptian flatmate testified that the defendant had knocked on her door one Friday afternoon and she scolded him and kicked him away when he asked her for her number.

“Sometime after midnight, my flatmate called me and she sounded hysterical over the phone and asked me to come to the apartment. When I reached the flat, I found the police there and I was told that my flatmate had been raped,” she told prosecutors.

The Sierra Leonean defendant was convicted in two criminal cases of similar nature and jailed for one year and six months in 2015 and 2016.

Tuesday’s ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
