Policeman spotted a crowd gathered around the suspect who was making them play for money
Dubai: An employee has been accused of organising a street gambling game at a public place and allowing passersby to play for money.
A police patrol was doing the rounds in front of a money exchange house in May at Al Muhaisna when a policeman spotted a crowd milling around the 31-year-old Indian employee.
The policeman walked towards the crowd and found out that the 31-year-old had set up a street gambling game, by using a torchlight and a gambling device, and was calling passersby to bet.
The employee was apprehended instantly and taken to the police station for investigation.
Prosecutors accused the suspect of organising a gambling game in a public place and inviting people to bet for money.
According to the accusation sheet, prosecutors asked the court to implement the Penal Code’s articles 415 and 416, according to which the suspect could face up to 10 years in jail, if found guilty.
When he showed up before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday, the suspect pleaded guilty and admitted that he organised a gambling game in public.
He asked the presiding judge to hand him a lenient punishment.
The policeman testified to prosecutors that he spotted a crowd surrounding the suspect at 8pm.
“When I went to check what was happening, I realised that the crowd were gambling beside the pavement. The suspect was taken into custody immediately for organising a gambling game in a public place. We seized a torchlight and a device that he had been using as part of the game. We also found in his possession Dh415 that he had made out of the gambling … he admitted that he organised a gambling game in public,” the policeman claimed to prosecutors.
The suspect was quoted as admitting to prosecutors that he organised a gambling game in public and invited people to play for money.
A ruling will be heard on July 19.
