A man who hanged himself at a construction site on Friday left a note for his wife before he died, police sources said, speculating the man had financial difficulties.

Sadki Pannikar Abdul Majid, an Indian, was found at about 2.30pm in a building under construction in the Rafa'a area. A police source said the man hanged himself.

"He also left a letter for his wife," the source said, but could not say what the man had written.

"It's possible the man was in debt this is common enough."

Another police source said the man had financial difficulties, but declined to comment further. It was not clear whether the man worked at the construction site.

Officials at the construction company where the man died said they were not aware of any of their workers committing suicide.

Officials at the Indian Consulate said police had not informed them of the body, most likely because they were closed for the weekend.

Suicides among Indian workers are on the increase, consular officials have said.

Last year, 67 Indians committed suicide in Dubai and the northern emirates.

In 2003, 64 committed suicide and in 2002, 54 Indians committed suicide.

A Dubai police study showed that Indians accounted for three-fourths of all attempted suicides among expatriate residents.
