Sharjah: Sharjah Police are investigating the mysterious death of an Indian man who suffocated in a garbage chute of a residential building on Thursday afternoon, an official told Gulf News on Saturday.
The man fell down the garbage chute from the 15th floor of the residential building in Al Nahda area in Sharjah.
Security guards and cleaners informed the police and a team from the Criminal and Investigation Department went to the crime scene.
The body of the deceased, who was identified as S.A., 26, was discovered by the building’s cleaners when they entered the garbage room to change the bins on Thursday at round 3.30pm.
They were shocked to see the head of the deceased when they opened the garbage chute cover.
“We called the police operations room. Unfortunately, when the police and the ambulance arrived the man had already died. They pulled out the body from the garbage chute and it was transferred to the forensic laboratory,” they said.
Gulf News obtained the CCTV footage showing the deceased walking in the corridor of the 15th floor and holding a plastic bag and entered the garbage room but he did not come out again.
According to the police, the deceased was an illegal resident and recruited illegally by an Indian family in the building.
Residents of the building told Gulf News that the man used to drop leaflets containing his contact numbers.
The police urged families and institutions to respect the UAE residency laws and refrain from hiring people illegally because they put themselves at risk of theft and other misdemeanours and could face legal action.
The members of the public were requested to play an active role in bringing the culprits to book by assisting the police whenever they observe a suspicious activity or know of someone staying illegally in the country.
They can report illegal residents to the police on the toll-free number Najeed 800151 or 901.
