Abu Dhabi: An Indian suspected of breaking into 11 service and trading stores and stealing valuables worth Dh50,000 is in police custody, the Ministry of Interior announced today.

The 30 year-old man, B.N.B.K., is believed to have broken into clinics, beauty salons and mobile phone stores and the police managed to recover some of the stolen items.

Colonel Ahmad Saif Bin Zeitoun Al Muhairi, acting director of the Capital Police Directorate, said that a number of thefts had been reported, all of which seemed to have been performed by entering stores through the window and using a hammer to break safes.

After setting up an investigative team, using surveillance and the technology available, police were able to determine the suspect’s exact location in the capital’s Khalidiyah area where he was captured upon attempting to flee and resist arrest.

B.N.B.K. is apparently wanted for issuing a bounced cheque and absconding. He reportedly confessed to burgling the 11 stores and has been referred to prosecutors.

Al Muhairi requested public service institutions and trading store owners to keep their valuables in a safe place and to practise caution when dealing with strangers who frequent locations in a suspicious manner.

The official also urged the public to report any suspicious behaviour to help prevent crimes.

In March last year, a woman used a toy gun to rob a money exchange store in Abu Dhabi. Fortunately, the staff at the store called the police who managed to disarm the woman before she took any money.

Since then, the staff at that facility have received training on how to handle such situations. According to police, the Filipina suspect had attempted the robbery to pay back a Dh140,000 debt which she had accumulated.
