Sharjah: Sharjah Police arrested 52 Bangladeshi men living in the country illegally and hiding in an automobile workshop in the industrial area.

They were also found to be selling pornographic CDs, which they distributed from a garage that was rented out to them by the owner for Dh130 a month per person.

Lt Col Yousuf Al Naqbi, Director of Criminal and Investigation Department (CID) said that police had received information about illegal activities in the garage, which was being used as a hotel. The garage was owned by Y.A.R., which was a safety hazard to the tenants.

"A team of CID monitored the movement around the area and before the raid was carried out, the area was cordoned off in order to prevent anybody from escaping," he said.

Action

Police arrested all the illegal residents and discovered that they were in the possession of a large quantity of pornographic CDs that they were promoting in the industrial areas.

During the interrogation, Al Naqbi said that the owner confessed that his automobile workshop was suffering from a lack of business and in order to bear the expenses, he was forced to rent it out to the suspects who were homeless.

He said he was planning to stop renting out space in the garage because he knew it was against the law, but only after his business had improved.

Lt Col Al Naqbi said that police have currently intensified inspection campaigns against illegal residents.
