Dubai: A police officer and a housemaid have been charged with having sex outside marriage after the woman gave birth to a baby girl who has been diagnosed with a heart disease.

The 23-year-old staff sergeant at Nad Al Sheba police station failed to show up in court on Monday where he was accused of fathering the baby of a 21-year-old absconding Ethiopian domestic worker.

The details of the case date back to 2009 when out-of-duty police officer M.A. met E.J. After dating for four months, they had unprotected sex and she became pregnant. In May 2010, while M.A. was in China, E.J. visited a hospital for severe abdominal pain and was told that she was five months pregnant.

She informed M.A., who told investigators that after receiving the news, he had asked his brother to start marriage procedures. As E.J. was an absconding maid, she contacted her sponsor for a release.

"He asked me to pay a lot of money," she said. As they were unable to formalise the marriage, E.J. tried to abort her pregnancy but failed.

On November 11, M.A. rushed her to the Iranian Hospital where she underwent a Caesarean section delivery.

The newborn had a heart condition and needed urgent surgery. She was referred to Rashid Hospital, which called the police as the suspects failed to provide a marriage certificate. The next hearing is on December 13.
