A 30-year-old man who repeatedly stabbed a woman outside her home for rejecting his advances has been found guilty of attempted murder.
He was also found guilty of consuming liquor.
The 23-year-old Indian woman, who worked as a dancer, was attacked outside her Deira home after returning from work in the early hours of the morning.
The Dubai Police Operations Room was notified that the woman, identified as P.D., had been attacked. A patrol was dispatched to the scene, where officers found her lying in a pool of blood.
She had sustained several stab wounds on various parts of her body and was rushed to hospital.
Witnesses managed to detain the attacker, who worked as a driver, until the police came.
The police heard the assailant knew the victim from the bar where she worked.
When the dancer started socialising with other customers and behaving in an intimate fashion with them he grew jealous.
It was said the accused called up the dancer after she finished work at about 2.30am. He asked the 23-year-old to call him back but she said she did not have enough credit on her phone.
Five minutes later he called her again and started yelling at her. She told him that she would be going out with one of the other customers. Then she said she was going back home.
It was heard the Indian driver was under the influence of alcohol when he grabbed a knife and went to wait for P.D near her building. The moment she stepped off her work shuttle bus and headed towards her building, he leapt out and stabbed her.
She fell to the ground instantly and started bleeding. In his statement, the assailant confessed to the charges. It was discovered the two had known each other.
The Dubai Public Prosecution department charged the driver with attempted murder and consuming liquor.
The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced the 30-year-old Indian driver, identified as S.N., to one year in jail.
The driver will be deported after serving his sentence.
