Sharjah: Two Arab men have been arrested by Sharjah Police for allegedly trading in counterfeit tyres, an officer said on Saturday.
The counterfeit products, valued at Dh250,000, were cheap copies of global brands and were to be sold in the local market. The police seized the consignment following a tipoff from an automobile spare parts company.
The police, accompanied by managers of the company, raided a warehouse in Sharjah Industrial Area where a large quantity of counterfeit tyres were found. Samples were taken for testing and they turned out to be fake.
The tyres were meant to be sold in the retail market in the country and some were to be exported outside. Two Arab men were arrested in connection with the illegal trade.
The suspects were transferred to the public prosecution.
Colonel Ebrahim Al Ajel, director of the Criminal and Investigation Department, said the police would take strict measures to protect the emirate’s market from counterfeit automobile parts. Unscrupulous culprits undertake trading in such counterfeit products to make profits at the expense of people’s safety, he said.
