Dubai: A chief accountant has been accused of assaulting his co-worker, who is an accountant, and injuring him when the latter went to discuss about a cut in his salary when he didn’t show up at work.

The 36-year-old Indian accountant was said to have been missed work for a sometime before he had a heated argument with his 35-year-old countryman chief accountant in November 2016.

Once the accountant questioned the 35-year-old chief accountant’s decision to cut his salary, according to records, the latter slapped the 36-year-old and pushed him down to the floor.

Other co-workers intervened instantly and stopped the assault before the police were called to the premises of the company where both men worked.

The 35-year-old Indian was taken into custody after his countryman had insisted on pursuing legal action.

Prosecutors charged the 35-year-old suspect of beating his co-worker and causing him a five per cent permanent disability in his left ear.

According to the charges sheet, prosecutors said the power of the slap caused the accountant an ear injury and landed him down on the floor.

The suspect pleaded not guilty and refuted the accusation of causing a permanent disability when he defended himself before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Monday.

“We had a heated argument and I pushed him but I didn’t intend to injure him,” the suspect told presiding judge Urfan Omar.

The 36-year-old accountant claimed to prosecutors that the assault happened at his workplace when he went to discuss his salary cut.

“My salary had been cut and when I was discussing the issue with the suspect, he got angry and beat me. First he slapped me brutally and then pushed me down to the floor, then I called the police,” he testified to prosecutors.

A fellow accountant claimed to prosecutors: “I was present and heard them having a heated argument when the 36-year-old asked the suspect why had he cut his salary at 9.30am. The suspect had responded that the supervisor had instructed him to cut the salary of the accountant for missing work … he also asked the 36-year-old to discuss the matter with the supervisor before they indulged in a heated argument.”

A ruling will be heard on April 16.
