Dubai: A British teenager jailed in Dubai for having physical relations with an underage British girl has been released following a royal pardon.

In a statement to Gulf News, the Dubai Media Office confirmed that Marcus Fakana, a UK national, was among 985 prisoners granted clemency by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, on June 3, 2025. The mass pardon was issued ahead of the Eid Al Adha holiday.

Fakana’s release was part of a wider amnesty granted by Sheikh Mohammed in his capacity as Ruler of Dubai, benefiting inmates of various nationalities held in the emirate's correctional facilities.

Sheikh Mohammed, who also serves as Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, issued the pardon as part of an annual gesture of goodwill intended to give prisoners a second chance.
