‘Bomb belt’ woman gets seven years jail sentence

Uzbek suspect began screaming when verdict was announced

Last updated:

Dubai: An Uzbek woman who threatened to detonate a fake bomb at Dubai Public Prosecution building last year was sentenced to seven years in jail.

When the presiding judge announced the verdict, the woman, Z.H., 33, became hysterical and started screaming. The courtroom had to be cleared till she calmed down. The court found an Emirati man, M.Y., guilty of aiding and abetting her and sentenced him to two years in jail. In an earlier hearing, M.Y., 28, denied helping Z.H. build the fake explosive belt.

The woman had denied endangering lives and threatening people inside the building or intent to harm an Emirati man, J.S., who she claims is the father of her 10-year-old son. “My client was under emotional stress,” the woman’s lawyer told court. “She merely wanted a paternity test to affirm the identity of her son’s father.” Z.H. will be deported after the sentence. The verdict can be appealed within 15 days.
