Ajman: Police have arrested a motorist involved in a hit-and-run accident last Friday that left five Arab women injured, an official said on Sunday.
Lieutenant Colonel Saif Abdullah Al Falasi, Director of Ajman Police’s Traffic Department, told Gulf News that the driver, a Gulf national in his 30s, quickly backed up and fled from the scene but was arrested later.
The Arab women, two 16-year-olds and others aged 11, 31 and 45, were injured when the car ran over them while they were walking in Al Nuaimyah area in Ajman.
Four of them received minor injuries and were discharged from hospital on the same day while one was admitted due to serious injuries. The condition of the woman, who gave birth to a baby in August, was described as stable although she had sustained fractures in her body.
Police and paramedics arrived at the accident scene after the police operations room got a call on Friday around 7pm.
Eyewitnesses told police that the motorist who caused the accident drove away. The police searched the area for the missing motorist and found the car parked in one area.
They were able to identify the vehicle from data gathered at the accident scene and arrested the suspect five days after the incident. The police found that the car owner sold his vehicle to another person who caused the accident but the car was not transferred to the buyer.
Lt Col Al Falasi said the suspect was driving in a reckless manner and attributed the accident to lack of attention and negligence.
The driver confessed to running over the women and fleeing the scene, saying he was surprised by the women who suddenly appeared in front of his car.
The case has been referred to public prosecution.
