Sharjah : Police say they have arrested 123 Asian men since the beginning of January, who were found to have been living illegally in the country or who had run away from their sponsors.

Many of those arrested were also found to have been bootlegging alcohol in workers’ accommodations, police said.

The arrests were made after a campaign kicked off at the beginning of January 2012 by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Sharjah Police.

The campaign focused on industrial, commercial and residential areas, and targeted people who illegally worked in such professions in cleaning cars, collecting garbage, selling products along the street.

A number of those arrested were accused of selling mobile phone credit to pedestrians in various streets in Sharjah.

Sharjah police urged members of the public to cooperate with the police and report any case where they witnessed illegal activities along the streets of Sharjah city.
