DUBAI An Indian man who recently sold his car in Dubai was in for a rude shock when a woman drove away with it after presenting him a dud cheque.

Asifulla Khan, 29, who works for a private firm in Dubai, said the incident occurred on July 11.

He said the woman approached him in response to an online ad he had posted for the sale of his car – a 2007 model Audi A4.

He said: “The woman claimed she was a businesswoman from Abu Dhabi. She and her partner, who introduced himself as her brother, said they were purchasing my car for the agreed sum (Dh25,000) for their company. Just as the sale agreement was being finalised, the woman said she could only pay by cheque.”

Khan said he initially refused to take the cheque. “But the woman started screaming and cornered me with promises about how it was the holy month of Ramadan and deposited the cheque in my account. With the sale agreement signed, they took the car and left saying they would register it the next day.”

But the cheque bounced the next day.

“I know people will say I was naïve to accept a cheque. This Ramadan has been special for me and my wife as we’ve just got married. But now I have learnt the hard way that I should not trust people easily,” said Khan.
